Following the ancient silk route as they headed for Kandhar, John and Dave walked on a concrete highway that had been constructed by the Soviet Union for Afghanistan. The area was hot, dry and desolate with no water in sight and without the Turkish supply wagon to carry lots of water for Willie Makeit II and the brothers it would have been impossible to cross on foot.
